Course overview

The conversion to a Low-Carbon Economy (LCE) is monumental task as it requires reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which are produced by nearly every type of human activity. This universality has led to a series of global treaties and agreements as a means to avoid catastrophic climate change and individual countries are expected to fulfil their obligations. The UK has been relatively successful in the move towards a low-carbon economy and this course explores a wide range of topics in this complex area.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for managers in both private and public sectors as the topics covered span the range of technology, law and regulation, commerce and society. The course would also be suitable for individuals who simply want to get the latest information on the state of our transition to a low-carbon economy.

Benefits to individual and the organisation

This course will benefit public sector officials, whose roles are evolving towards enforcement and support in the move to a low-carbon economy.

Private organisations must now not only comply with ever-stricter regulations, but also do their part to contribute to the new economy, which with foresight, may benefit from the new opportunities presented. The strength of this course is that it offers a broad perspective in conjunction with detailed information.

Content

This course covers the following topics:

  • The history of the ecological and naturalist movement in the UK and how this has led to the urban geography that we have today;
  • The connection with the environment through art, architecture and city planning;
  • A brief history of carbon reduction policy and practice in the UK's alternative energy and built environment and how they link with international treaties;
  • A picture of the future at our universities and research institutions: how we are using research to educate a new generation of environmental entrepreneurs, scientists, activists, planners, builders and engineers;
  • The innovation infrastructure; entrepreneurship, science parks and venture capital in the UK and how this encourages technological and logistic solutions to environmental problems;
  • The use of modern, lean, management techniques to improve the efficiency of the built environment;
  • The current situation of the UK's environmental industry; recent developments and government support.

Duration

The length of the workshop can be tailored to suit the organisation's requirements, however the minimum duration is two days.

Price

The price for a two-day programme is £7,200; this would be for up to 12 delegates. Additional delegates on the two-day programme are charged at £400 per delegate. Additional days, again for up to 12 delegates, would be charged at £3,600 per day. Delegates over the minimum of 12 are charged at £200 per delegate per additional day.

A certificate of attendance will be presented to the delegates at the end of the course.
