Electives

The Oxford Brookes MBA gives you the opportunity to develop an area of interest through electives and a dissertation or consultancy project.

Some electives are offered as an intensive block and are open to all modes of study. Other electives are specific to a particular mode, but can be studied by students on any mode if you have the flexibility to attend scheduled classes at the Business School. Global Market Development

(Distance learning and block basis)

Engaging in global markets is a matter of survival for many organisations in an increasingly competitive international business environment. Understand the importance of a strategy for change that provides for flexibility of response at local and national levels.

Strategic Accounting and Finance

(Distance learning)

This module provides an opportunity for non-financial managers to build on the core Accounting and Finance module. You will extend your understanding of the factors impacting on strategic decisions, including financial market conditions, global economic and financial factors and the risk associated with these decisions.

New Venture Business Planning

(Block basis)

Aimed at those who may be interested in setting up their own business or who may be required to set up a new division with an established business. This module provides the knowledge and skills to put this into practice.

Enterprise Development

(Available mid-week, in the evenings, on campus)

Entrepreneurship is seen as a key factor in national prosperity, and most countries have developed policies to create a culture in which enterprise can thrive. This understanding is developed through this elective.

Working with other Schools across the University, we offer a range of specialist industry-focused electives. Participation may mean attending classes on campus during the week.

Real Estate

Of particular interest to those working in the real estate industry who wish to broaden their knowledge of business management, this module is also of interest to those in general management or professional roles who wish learn about real estate.

Digital Marketing Communication Strategies

On this elective you will benefit from input by specialist staff in the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences.

Editorial Management

Taught by staff in the Department of Publishing, this module is particularly appropriate for those who have some experience of working in the publishing sector.

Tourism Industry Dynamics and Strategy

On this elective you will benefit from the industry knowledge of staff in the Department of Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism Management. It is of interest to those working in these industries and those who wish to gain more insight into these sectors.

Dissertation and consultancy projects

The capstone of your MBA is your dissertation or consultancy project, which brings together your knowledge and learning and provides the opportunity to pursue an area of interest in more depth.

The Dissertation

(all modes)

For the dissertation you study a strategic management issue in depth, developing skills of self-managed systematic academic enquiry. This route may be of particular relevance to those wishing to continue their studies to PhD level.

Individual Consultancy Project

(all modes)

The consultancy project is the opportunity to work on a specific strategic project for an organisation that is seen very much as the client. Normally you will work with an employer or an organisation that you have access to and are familiar with.

The project develops skills of systematic enquiry which will remain useful throughout your career. It may help you to present a business case for funding your MBA, as it provides the employer with a valuable piece of consultancy.

Group Consultancy Project

(Full time only)

The group consultancy project provides the opportunity to work in a team on a specific strategic project for a client organisation. The project develops skills of systematic enquiry, leadership and team working which will remain useful throughout your career.
