Chris Cooper's visit to Vancouver Island University
Monday 20 March 2017
In January and February 2017, Chris Cooper - Co-Director of the Centre for
International Tourism and Events Management Research – was awarded competitive
funding to visit Vancouver Island University (VIU) in Canada.
Chris went to VIU
under their visiting scholar scheme with the primary aim of linking in with VIU's
World Leisure Centre of Excellence and exploring joint research opportunities
between our two centres. Chris also met with their Vice President, Research and plans
were made for a major funding application in 2018 to create an international network
of tourism and leisure centres. There is also the opportunity to create a Centre for
Island Studies at VIU, with Brookes playing a key role in the initiative. Other
activities included presenting research methods classes and a public lecture on policy
initiatives for destinations in decline. The visit lasted for three weeks and has laid the
foundations for a close working relationship between VIU and Brookes researchers.
