Research Areas

The Business School undertakes research across a wide range of management issues in the private, public and non-profit sectors.

We adopt a flexible, practice-based approach derived from the experience and expertise of our staff. The School's research activity is concentrated in six research areas.

Attracting funds for research

Research grants come from a wide variety of sources, often in partnership with other organisations. The Commercial Services division is our main point of contact for contract work and applied research bids.

Researchers in the School have been able to attract funds from such diverse organisations as:

  • British Academy
  • Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development
  • Department of Trade and Industry
  • Economic and Social Research Council
  • English Tourism Council
  • Learning Skills Councils
  • The Leverhulme Trust
  • National Health Service Trusts
  • Waste and Resource Action Programme
  • The Wellcome Trust

In addition to specific grants and income from contract or commercial research, we have also successfully bid for significant Higher Education and Funding Council (HEfCE) Grants.

These are often for research programmes dealing with the more inward-focused area of pedagogic research (research into the processes of learning and teaching) and dissemination of good practice throughout the higher education sector.
