 About Joanna

Joanna completed her PhD in Sociology and lectured at the Centre for European Studies at Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland. She is also a graduate of the executive education programme ‘Managerial Skills for International Business', INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France. During this period, she also held visiting positions in Spain, the UK, Ireland, France, Portugal and the USA. She has received various awards and grants for her research work, including a French Government Research Fellowship, Fellowship Ryoici Sasakawa, EU Phare, Erasmus and Equal programmes. Subsequently she moved into business where she spent over five years in a financial institution as HR Director, while continuing to be involved with business education at the London Business School and Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School. During this time she also participated in various consultancy projects on the management of cultural heritage sites in Poland, Spain and Turkey. Following the completion of an EU-funded research project concerned with development factors for social entrepreneurship, Joanna moved to the Oxford Brookes University Business School in 2007.

Joanna's current research focuses on the international aspects of organizations. She is specifically interested in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and cultural organizations. She is currently leading a British Academy/Leverhulme Trust funded study on the internationalization of Polish SMEs (see more details about this project in Research). The main aim of this project is to investigate the challenges facing Polish SMEs seeking to expand their business abroad and how these can successfully be met through appropriate strategies, methods of decision-making, and use of network links. The study also explores opportunities for and barriers to international collaboration between Polish and UK firms. This research project is part of a larger study conducted in eight countries: China, Denmark, Egypt, India, Jordan, Poland, UAE and the UK, by an international team, co-ordinated by Professor John Child at the University of Birmingham. Joanna is also working on smaller projects in the area of the management of cultural organizations, i.e. “Sacred spaces: From ‘visitor management' to ‘managing the experience of visitors' – the case of St Paul's Cathedral, London', conducted with Dr Stephen Shaw and Dr Aylin Orbasli (http://www.icomos-uk.org/icomos-resources/).

Joanna has been teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate and post-experience levels. She currently supervises four PhD students.

She has chaired sessions at numerous international conferences, and is a member of the Scientific Board of RN17 of the European Sociological Association (ESA) and a member of ICOMOS-UK Cultural Tourism Scientific Committee.

SME Internationalization and Network Attachment

[SINET]

‘Small but going global'

Objective and Scope

The aim of this project is to investigate the challenges facing SMEs seeking to expand their business abroad and how these can successfully be met through appropriate strategies, methods of decision-making, and use of network links including relations with other firms (e.g. large customers), government agencies, and consultants.

Over 200 small and medium-sized enterprises [SMEs] from nine countries are participating in the research. These countries are: China, Denmark, Egypt, India, Jordan, Poland, Taiwan, UAE and the UK. Each SME is located in one of three sectors: biotechnology, clothing and software development.

The inclusion of a large number of firms should produce recommendations of practical value, while comparison across countries and sectors will help to indicate where such recommendations need to be tailored to local circumstances.

Expected contribution to policy and practice

1. Enhancement of SME's awareness of the problems and choices involved in international expansion and about the effectiveness of different approaches to decision-making and networking.

2. Learning from the experience and practices of SMEs in other countries.

3. An immediately relevant application will be to help SMEs seeking to understand how to construct key network relationships with firms or business people at home or abroad in order to cope with institutional and other sources of vulnerability in foreign markets.

4. The findings of this research will be of value to policy-makers and public agencies, such as chambers of commerce and government export-promoting bodies, whose main role is to encourage and support trade by providing introductions and advice related to overseas markets.
